Verical Gardening at the Green Expo

Okay, vertical gardens... 15 feet tall, 60 feet wide, irragated with 2 foot snap-in replaceable planters... Woah Trigger!

Okay, the go green gardeners start small with a found fence with diagonally drilled holes. They nailled plastic constuction fencing to the back. It was lined with moss pads then filled with potting soil and plant plugs.

Don't forget to water! For more info try Vertical Gardening Tips.

Fresh? Yes! and Easy? Very!

The hubby and I went to check out the fresh & easy Alhambra store today. It was fun!

The store is really bare bones, but good bones. The prices are reasonable too. The aisles are nice and wide.

They seem to have a choice of varieties with out having too many brands.

Of course, they have their own brand that was especially appealing in the salad dressing aisle! They have lots of choices for prepared foods! We could not resist an Hawaiian styled pizza and some vanilla flan!

They have self check out only, which seems shocking a first, but lots of friendly employees stocking shelves and bagging groceries. I am still going shop at Trader Joe's but would much rather go to fresh & easy instead of the big grocery store on the milk and hair conditioner run!

Community Service: MLK Day My Way

I picked up trash today in my neighborhood of LA 32. I put my Jarritos'08
t-shirt on and my gardening boots and gloves and I was off!
(These are all after shots because I did not want to juggle the camera while trying pick up trash.)

Yes, I picked up a expertly rapped loaded diaper, a condom, Kaiser Permanente hospital release papers, car parts, cigarette boxes, fast food containers and bags, sauce packets, candy wrappers, a DWP bill torn into pieces, a lot of junk mail, grocery flyers...

Hundreds of people watched me pick up the trash. Some waved, some looked at me strangely, many did not even make eye contact. Only one elderly gentleman spoke to me. He asked me if I was a volunteer and did I get paid...

... Towards the end, I picked up a pair of XXL khaki shorts and a black and white bandanna from the street near that stop sign. I was not about to pick up the truck or the laundry detergent/gasoline can!

It took me a hour and a half. I estimate that the bag weighs about twenty pounds. I feel good. I picked up trash and the bonus is that I feel like I've been to the gym!

Crate and Barrel Pillows!

I scored three of these pillow covers only for $14.95 each at the Crate & Barrel Sale!

My Only New Year's Resolution!

I told the friendly guy at Trader Joe's that my only new year's resolution was to remember to put the shopping bags back in the car!

Toss that Poinsettia (& other gift-plant tips)

You must read this advice from the A Way to Garden website. I am that person that tries to keep the pointsettia alive with hopes of it maturing into a giant bush in the front yard! I am happy to say, that I also have a three year old "Christmas cactus" that merrily rolls along each year! Happy reading!

Oh So Retro...Yarn Covered Hangers

I have been meaning to post about these hangers made by Nanny Blanche, mother to Marti, Gammi to Teri (all my American Marthas), ever since I began this blogging activity! I realized today that I just pasted my 100th post! Tah dah! These hangers were made in the seventies. Look how nicely that acrylic yarn and the pom poms have held up!
My Mum made these for me at about the same time, when my favorite color was purple!

Mystrey House: Week 15

Well, like many other things these days, the hubby and I are cautiously optimistic about how the mystery house will turn out!

Tea Towel of the Month: January

Okay, this takes the cake, or should I say pudding. Pattie Tierney shares this fabulous tea towel with us for January and I am instantly returned to our past Christmas dinner at Chez Dave's. Make the time to check out Pattie's flickr for other great photo collections and her etsy shop of wearable literary art . Pattie had posted her tea towels to the Vintage Screened Tea Towel Group on flickr. Thank you Pattie!

Paul Smith Wall Hanging: All you need is...

Okay, so the Style Files beat me to it by at least three years. This wall hanging reminds me of my Aunty Aud who has been gone a year already! Her style sense is popular again (Jonathan Adler channels her big time!), so there are lots of happy moments, especially on flickr. I will post pictures of her home in Cannons Park on the blog when I get going on the stat camera set up!

"Home Sweet Home" flickr tour with Casper James

Across the pond, Casper James of Casper James Designs has pulled together an eye-popping pad in Brighton with a mix of his own graphic designs and collectibles. Okay, so just by chance he operates a stall at the antique market. I dig that mushroom lamp, the ashtray, the teapot, the knight in shinning armour...

the Robinson's sign, the sun rug...

the bubble vase, the painted wainscoting... Casper James, thanks for sharing!

Evening Out: Griffith Park Observatory

Last summer, Daughter's beau came to California for a visit. She suggested that we go for a visit to the Observatory. I had not been there for at least 25 years! The restoration takes you back in time, and strangely forward as well. This photograph by Andy Jurgensen elegantly captures the magic. Do not miss the planetarium shows, do your homework before you go!
